(I’m a young 65 now) starting out with regular embroidery, then counted cross stitch, then beginning in 1980 I began a quilting journey that lasted until the early 2000’s. At that point I had a burning desire to go back to embroidery but wanted to focus on silk ribbon because of the beautiful dimensional aspect of it. I discovered Kreinik threads about 8 years ago and have been incorporating it into my needle work whenever I can now.

Q: Do you have any tips on stitching with Kreinik threads?

A: I used the black glittery thread on my fish and it was very curly coming off the spool, making it not want to lay flat when I stitched. I finally ran it through my hair straightener tool (which heated it up a bit) and that took the curl out without damaging the thread.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration?

A: For me as an artist, inspiration comes from many places, nature, my gardens, Pinterest, bird watching, my photography etc. since I mostly stitch with silk ribbon I am constantly playing with new stitches or threads to see what will happen with them. I play around all the time. I have a small library of stitch books and if I am in a jam I go onto YouTube and watch tutorials regarding stitching. That helps a lot too!

KreinikGirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06029775278008499638noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8723861561754415119.post-25571718354549359732021-03-05T10:54:00.004-05:002021-03-05T10:54:43.139-05:00Spring silk colors in bloom

Spring is coming, along with blooms and colors galore. The pandemic created regulations and upheaval on every level: economic, medical, social, personal, national, international. It has been devastating for people and small businesses. Kreinik is still here because of two factors: 1. You; and 2. Our staff. Strengthened by your patience and their dedication, Kreinik is determined to get us all through 2020 and thriving in 2021 in the best possible way.

With that goal, we are enacting an extraordinary—but temporary—measure. For the next eight weeks, we are only making the top 60 to 80 colors in Kreinik #4, #8, and #12 Braid lines.

We know that limiting the colors in production sounds drastic, and some people won’t be able to get some colors temporarily, but we need to catch up. We were closed during the early days of the pandemic, which put us behind, and now we have a smaller crew due to the pandemic. If we exhaust our staff, they could become ill, so we are watching out for them.

We are also being cautious about hiring extra staff because we do not know where they have been and if they have been exposed to COVID. Supersoft elastic for making masks

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Kreinik is excited to announce that we are now making elastic, which is in great need during this mask-wearing time. We have two types: flat elastic (in two sizes) and round elastic (in one size).

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When the coronavirus pandemic hit, the Kreinik factory had to close per government mandate. As we all quarantined and started making masks, we quickly saw a need for elastic. Doug Kreinik and our chief engineer started modifying one of our ribbon-making machines and re-rigged it to make elastic. Our first customer was the West Virginia National Guard. We now have it available on our website. As we build up stock, we will be able to sell wholesale on a larger level. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We use a wonderful nylon/poly blend that is softer on people's ears.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Details:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">poly/nylon blend (no latex)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">cone contains 50 yards

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3 to 1 stretch, so you don't have to use as much on a mask

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">flat elastic comes in 1/8" and 1/4" widths

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">round elastic is about 3/32" diameter

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Update on thread production

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Kreinik factory is back operating, with modifications designed for the safety of our staff (distancing, sanitizing, shifts to reduce number of people in the building at a time). Since we were closed for a month, and shipped out everything we had on the shelves before closing, it will take at least a month to get threads made and shelves restocked—especially the most popular colors like gold, silver, pearl etc.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We ask for your patience during this time and appreciate your business and your interest in our threads. We know that many retailers are out of Kreinik threads, but we are working as hard and as quickly as we can to get orders out to everyone.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The outlet store is still closed and we are not allowing any visitors to the factory. The outlet store tent sale (usually in October) will not be held this year.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Stay safe and healthy, everyone!

The hot trend of stitching on photographs is a blend of two exciting mediums: visual art and fiber art. Photos are a refreshing base material for stitchers who want to further express their love for embroidery and for making images come to life.
Get inspired with the designs of Janet Dey

Friends in the Toronto area, check out this fabulous exhibit: https://business.facebook.com/events/1241059279416533/ Designer Janet Dey uses Kreinik threads in her fun, expressive, fascinating contemporary art. She hand-embroiders on enlarged modern prints of vintage photographs.

"It is a delight to work with the threads," Janet says. We love how the gold Kreinik Braid adds a dimensional effect and a touch of light, while keeping with the gorgeous vintage color schemes of the photographs.

About the exhibit

The Stephen Bulger Gallery is an art gallery in Toronto, Canada. If you live in the area, keep an eye on their schedule for other inspiring creative exhibits. Here are the details on the Janet Dey exhibit:

Exhibition Dates: February 22 – March 14, 2020

Artist Talk with Janet Dey: Saturday, February 22, 4pm

Public Reception: Saturday, February 22, 2 – 5pm

The gallery is pleased to present an exhibition in the Reading Room of work by Janet Dey featuring her series entitled “Magic”. The exhibition is on in conjunction with “Illusions: The Art of Magic” on display at the Art Gallery of Ontario from February 22 – May 18, 2020.

In “Magic”, Dey draws attention to well-known magicians who charmed and captivated audiences, and whose stories have been retold time and time again. Compelled by their dark and mysterious minds, Dey hand-embroiders on enlarged modern prints of vintage photographs. Every stitch and knot in Dey’s design embellishes or further hides the identity of the subjects. Often masking entire faces leaving only their eyes visible, the work takes on a new story, a vision told from Dey’s perspective and left for the viewer to discover. The final artwork is unique, designed to last another several lifetimes. A rebellion against time.

The source photographs are from the collection of David Ben, writer, stage magician, performer, and magic collector.

Plan accordingly! Kreinik color 015 Chartreuse is going to have a slight change in dye lot during the next production run in 2020. If you are mid project, make sure you have enough of the current dye lot.

A few things you can do to find old spools:

Contact needlework shops to see if they have old stock

Contact stitchers through Reddit, Facebook groups or other social media to see if they have an old spool and are willing to part with it or swap for something

Speaking of dye lots...

We have had a flurry of stitchers calling in a panic lately, mid project, looking for old dye lots. Sometimes we can find an old spool, but more often than not, we can't match it. Always, always, always make sure you have enough of a current dye lot — in any thread, yarn or even fabric — when you start your project.

This is especially important if you:

purchase needlework threads from a discount store or second-hand store

inherit someone's stitching stash

purchase from a shop going out of business or other clearance sale

buy needlework supplies from an estate sale

All manufacturers try to keep dye lots as close as possible, but sometimes it's inevitable. Minimize any stress by making sure you have enough to finish your project.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The 2020 Crazy Quilt Calendar is now available, and it's an easy way to grace your refrigerator, craft room, or office space with beautiful needlework.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Popular cross stitch designer Pam Kellogg is a long-time crazy quilter as well. She owns and publishes Crazy Quilt Quarterly Magazine which is devoted entirely to the art of contemporary crazy quilting and textile art. It's published four times a year and to go along with that, she publishes a yearly Crazy Quilt Calendar. "Although the calendar isn't cross stitch," Pam says, "it's a beautiful publication perfect for anyone who enjoys any type of needlework or quilting." We agree! It also makes a lovely Christmas present for any quilter or needleworker in your life.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Pam has designed free cross stitch patterns for Kreinik over the years, and often uses our sparkly threads in her crazy quilt designs featured on her blog. Metallics have long been used in both needlework techniques to offer light, texture, dimension...to make a design more visually appealing and interesting. The 2020 calendar features Kreinik in several of the designs. Take a close look at the photos and be inspired to try different threads and stitches to liven up your own embroidery designs.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A quick interview with this inspiring designer
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Q: Did you use any Kreinik threads in the projects?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A: Yes, I adore Kreinik threads! The large roses on the cover design is done in Broiderie Purse. It's outlined entirely in Kreinik #8 Braid using the chain stitch. Some of the other designs include #4 or #8 Braids as well.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

Q: Which Kreinik threads are your favorites for crazy quilting?

A: My favorites are #4 and #8 Braids but I also enjoy using the ribbons. And I always use Blending Filament for spider webs. They're fine and delicate like a real spider web and give a hint of sparkle. They make the web look like there's dew on it!

Q: How did you get into crazy quilting?

A: I started in 2000 when a friend of mine sent me a magazine that featured some contemporary crazy quilt blocks. I was so taken with it and immediately saw how I could include some cross stitch and charted work into crazy quilt pieces. I had no idea what I was doing when I started. But as with anything, the more I did it, the more it all made sense to me. I was never good at "free handing" my fancy stitches so I started using waste canvas and my own charted borders to create my seam treatments. This gave me perfectly spaced stitches every time! I've put 3 books together on using waste canvas for seam treatments.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What I enjoy most about crazy quilting is the freedom to use every needlework technique that I know how to do! There are no limits and since I have an affinity for anything sparkly and glittery, it's the perfect canvas for Kreinik metallic threads and lots of beads, sequins, vintage jewelry pieces and anything else I can sew on!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Doug Kreinik is full of interesting information. On a recent trip to Cleveland, Ohio, for a needlework trade show, he revealed a pretty cool Kreinik connection to Elvis Presley.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">In the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, an area is dedicated to singer/actor/icon Presley. The artifacts on display include a motorcycle, his guitars, and various items of clothing. As Doug and Kreinik Creative Director Dena Lenham stepped up to this leather jacket in the Elvis exhibit, Doug read the description. "Oh, Nudie Cohn. Nudie was a customer of my parents' when the company started," Doug casually mentioned.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Nudie, Nudie Cohn...the famed tailor-to-the-stars who also created Elvis' gold lame suit, was a customer of Jerry and Estelle Kreinik's little Kreinik Manufacturing Company! Both Jerry and Estelle were professionally involved in textiles—and Estelle was a professor of couturier design—before starting the thread company, so they were well versed in clothiers' embellishment needs. Since 1972, Kreinik threads have been worn in all kinds of places by all kinds of people. Today, the company still sells threads to top fashion houses in New York as well as costume production companies.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Elvis passed away in 1977, so he probably didn't wear any Kreinik threads (although we don't know for sure). We like to think he would have loved the sparkle.
